Instead of New Year Resolutions, make an end-of-year Resolution instead
Ideothetic Flow
Hi!
It is finally December! I hope all of you have had a good year, achieved your goals, and are now looking forward to some well deserved rest. This is also the 20th issue of this newsletter, so I would like to thank everyone for reading and supporting this little project of mine :)
As we start to wind down for the year, I would like to share an interesting suggestion by Lifehacker to make an end-of-year resolution for the last six weeks of the year. This would be a good way to harness that slower work pace at the end of the year to accomplish one of your goals. If you feel like the year has not been fulfilling, then this is also a good chance to recover the year and end it on a high note rather than wait for that start of year reset.
I also like this because it feels achievable. Committing to a single task for a few weeks feels less daunting and easier to stick with than a resolution for a whole year. If the task ends up resonating with your spirit, then it can easily carry its momentum into the new year.
Conversely, most new year resolutions fail. Too much can happen within a year to derail the best laid plans. The goal-setter ends up reaching the later half of the year with the stress of an unaccomplished task.
As an experiment, I set 6 new year resolutions when 2018 began with clear process based aim for each resolution, and a plan to track progress monthly. I wanted to see if this could break the curse of unaccomplished resolutions. My diligence ended after about 6 months, and I doubt formally setting and tracking new year resolutions made me progress more than if I had not bothered and continued life as is.
For those who will be setting a year end resolution, here are some pointers on how you can make this work (in infographic form as part of my attempt to learn more design skills):
If you will be setting an end of year resolution, do email me and let me know what you will be working on! I am also willing to be an accountability partner for those who need one. I am still thinking of what I want for my own year end resolution and am open to ideas!
Hope you have a great week ahead!
James

ABOUT
Ideothetic Flow is a fortnightly newsletter where I reflect on insights that I have found useful in rethinking life in a more realistic way.
Modern culture, media, and technology, for all their benefits, have distorted the view of a complete and happy life. The ideas I share are those which have helped me gain a deeper understanding of my own identity and circumstances, and inspire change towards a happier life, and I hope they will do the same for anyone else who reads this.
