A humourous take on the San Francisco startup life
Ideothetic Flow
Hi everyone!
An Honest Guide to the San Francisco Startup Life - Nitesh Goel is a humourous take into the mystical world of working for a startup in Silicon Valley. Something that not many of us in Singapore have an opportunity to experience. I hope it cheers you up as we move through the 3rd quarter of the year, or maybe inspires you to think about your career. For me this quarter tends to be the toughest stretch, with few public holidays, work building up, and the dismay of goals or projects set at the start of the year failing to complete.
I personally had been intrigued by the start-up life. It has always sounded like it would be such an enjoyable working experience - filled with unique encounters, high-tech tools, vibrant culture, and a chance to do things differently. This made it very hard to reject the offer to join Lazada when it came by (though its not really a start-up anymore).
I still enjoy working at Lazada. But after settling down awhile, I realise that, it is not really about all these startup features. Instead, what keeps me going is a simple mix of great management, and the opportunity to hone my skill as I work . Oh, and the dress code of course. It is not a perfect job, but does such a thing even exist? Better to try not to let the bad parts of work get to me, and keep the things I enjoy in mind as I plod along each day.
Now that I understand what I want in my career better, I think I would be less enthralled by the unique culture and have a more mature reason why I would join a start-up.
Please do let me know if any of you take that plunge to start your own business or join a startup. I would much love to hear about your experience! I am also most happy to talk about my own time in Lazada :)
Hope you have a great week ahead!
James
ABOUT
Ideothetic Flow is a fortnightly newsletter where I reflect on insights that I have found useful in rethinking life in a more realistic way.
Modern culture, media, and technology, for all their benefits, have distorted the view of a complete and happy life. The ideas I share are those which have helped me gain a deeper understanding of my own identity and circumstances, and inspire change towards a happier life, and I hope they will do the same for anyone else who reads this.
